CRSC 94th Annual General Meeting

The 94th Annual General Meeting of the Clyde River Steamer Club was held in the evening of Wednesday 15 April at Glasgow’s Maldron Hotel. As well as the assembled audience, which included Membership Secretary Stuart Craig, a good number of members were able to follow the proceedings on a live Zoom transmission. The meeting was also filmed for future viewing in YouTube.

The CRSC president is Gavin Stewart and he chaired the meeting in his usual relaxed style. Now halfway through his two-year tenure as president, in his report he reflected on the past session, and how attempts to deliver his ‘presidential address’ were stymied by, firstly a work commitment, and then the ‘great fire’ of Glasgow last month, which disrupted the city’s transport network. However, Gavin assured his audience that his much awaited presentation will soon be… well, presented!

Next on the agenda was the joint secretarial and treasurer’s report. Our treasurer, William Tomlinson, deserves credit for juggling both roles during the past few months, with help from Eric Schofield and others on the committee. The main point with the accounts – given in his inimitable style – was the success in cutting some of the club’s overheads during the past year, especially with regard to the printing of our two publications. As the club finances seem secure it was felt that the subscription for the current year should remain at £35. Club auditor, Graeme Hogg, acknowledged that the accounts gave a true picture of the club’s finances.

Both President Gavin Stewart and Vice President James Fisher have now entered their second years in post, and the election of office bearers followed with no change to the overall make-up of the committee:

Secretary : vacant

Treasurer : WILLIAM TOMLINSON

Membership Secretary : STUART CRAIG

Cruising Manager : GRAEME HOGG [interim]

Review Editor : STUART CRAIG

Magazine Editor : vacant

Publicity Manager : NEIL GUTHRIE

Ordinary Members : ERIC SCHOFIELD and JOHN NEWTH

Auditor : GRAEME HOGG

There being no further business, the Maldron audience settled down to watch a 20-minute video of images of past Clyde Steamers.

Entitled “Clyde Steamers on Canvas” this beautifully edited presentation, displaying the stunning watercolours of Hugh McGill, paraded our old favourite steamers in their glory. Past CRSC president Roy Paterson deserves considerable credit for the addition of music and editing of the piece. It was impossible to pick out a favourite among the 49 paintings, but for me the PS Galatea takes some beating!

Stuart Craig’s favourite picture from the evening – PS Galatea skilfully captured by artist Hugh McGill

The selection of splendid pictures illustrating the past in vivid colour was a fitting way to end our AGM, and highlighted why we love our ships, old and new, and our club, so much.

Please note that there are vacancies on the CRSC committee for secretary, magazine editor and cruising manager. Anyone interested in these roles would be greatly welcomed and supported by the current committee. Please give it some thought…. Working for the club is great fun!
