Obituary: Dick Smith

Members will be sad to hear that Richard (Dick) Smith passed away on 3 August 2017. He was 81.

Dick Smith (1936-2017)

Dick was a member of CRSC for over 50 years and a regular attender at Club meetings. He served on the committee as Membership Secretary 1982-85 and then as joint Auditor, with Ken Mills, from 1985 to 1999.

Born on 23 June 1936, Dick was educated at Langside Primary School in Shawlands, Glasgow, and then at Hutchesons’ Grammar School. He spent his entire career working for the Clydesdale Bank.

He married Jean and they had two children, Richard and Jane. Family holidays were spent at Kilchattan Bay on Bute where Dick gained his love of Clyde steamers. His other passion was Pollok Junior Football Club, where he could be seen regularly on the terraces, enjoying a pie and Bovril while shouting support (or otherwise) at the team.

Dick Smith, not to be confused with his late namesake R.N.W. Smith, was a witty, smart chap who was easy to approach and chat to. He was a skilled photographer and thoroughly enjoyed the fellowship of enthusiasts aboard a ‘steamer’ or at Club meetings. He will be missed by his many friends at CRSC.

Happy memories: Marchioness of Breadalbane c1934 at Kilchattan Bay, where Dick Smith spent childhood holidays and gained his love of the Clyde steamers. Copyright CRSC Archive Collection
