Professor Donald Meek gives an illustrated talk about two 19th century companies, later amalgamated, that provided a lifeline to countless small communities in the Hebrides.
From 7.30pm
At Jurys Inn
Glasgow G1 1QG
A native of Tiree and author of The Kingdom of MacBrayne, Professor Meek speaks with unique authority about an unjustly neglected aspect of Hebridean shipping history — the story of McCallum Orme, owners of Dunara Castle and the first Hebrides, ‘all the way’ steamers that served small communities from Colonsay to Carbost with a fraction of the subsidy received by MacBraynes.
Entry is free and non-members are welcome: please arrive early to socialise in the ante-room on the first floor of Jurys Inn, where photographs are available for purchase.
