Richard Orr – The Call of the Clyde

The Club is hosting an extra summer meeting in the board room of Fairfield Museum in Govan on Wednesday 18 June, starting at 1215. Club member Richard Orr is well known as a speaker and as the author of two excellent books from the diaries he kept when sailing as an assistant purser on TS Marchioness of Graham and TS Queen Mary II in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He will share parts of his career with us, after which Iain Quinn, who devised the event with Richard, will question him more on his experiences. It will be a chance to learn more about those more colourful days on the Clyde, getting to hear about some of the ships, personalities and incidents of the time.

The session will start at 12.15 with a sandwich lunch and Richard’s presentations will be split between the Marchioness (a product of Fairfields) and Queen Mary II. It should finish by around 15.30. It is hoped to have John McNulty’s beautiful model of Queen Mary II on display together with some artefacts from the Club’s collection.

The Museum can be reached by the Subway (a 10 minute walk from Govan Station), by No. 26 or 23 McGill’s buses, to the second stop beyond Govan Cross, on foot from Partick across the new Govan-Partick Bridge, or by car. There is limited visitor parking behind the building and on street parking. More details on the Museum and how to reach it can be found here (link will open in a new window).

This is a new venture for the Club, partly in response to feedback from our survey where there was an appetite for meetings at different times and different venues. In this instance, there will be a charge of £12, which will include lunch. Future events and pricing will be assessed in light of the success of this venture. It promises to be a most enjoyable occasion. As places will be limited, book your place now! Bookings can only be made here.
