Welcome to the Spring Newsletter
Spring is well on its way, bringing longer days and the promise of milder weather.
One of the most notable developments so far in 2026, has been the arrival of the Turkish-built MV Isle of Islay, which berthed at Inchgreen on Sunday 22nd February after a weather-delayed delivery voyage.
Following a full inspection and re-certification in Garvel Drydock, the vessel is now preparing for crew familiarisation before entering service on the Kennacraig-Port Askaig-Port Ellen route by the end of March/early April.
Meanwhile, PS Waverley has commenced major winter refit work at James Watt Dock, funded in part by a highly successful £135,000 winter appeal.
Her overhaul includes replacement of the fire-suppression system, both masts, and fifteen dining-saloon windows. She is expected to enter dry dock mid-March for her annual inspection, with the 2026 cruising timetables already being released.
Club Activities & Winter Programme
The club’s winter programme concludes with the AGM on Wednesday 15th April, followed by a special video presentation entitled ‘Clyde Steamers on Canvas’.
Members are warmly encouraged to attend and take part, reinforcing the sense of community and shared enthusiasm that lies at the heart of the CRSC.
Cruise Update (by Graeme Hogg)
Cruise planning continues to face challenges due to ongoing CalMac vessel breakdowns and delays.
However, with MV Isle of Islay now in Scotland, the club hopes to organise a trip on her later in the year once she has fully settled into service.
Whether transport is arranged by coach or left to individuals will depend on cost and logistical considerations, and further member feedback is welcomed.
Another outing being explored for the summer involves travelling to Brodick on MV Caledonian Isles before joining PS Waverley for an afternoon cruise along Arran’s coastline, with ample time for island exploration.
A firm date will be announced once Waverley’s finalised timetable is published.
Thanks to the good offices of Waverley Excursions, a confirmed highlight is the Nominated Excursion on PS Waverley scheduled for Sunday 16th August, offering members reduced fares and a meal package on a scenic Round Bute cruise via the Largs Channel. Full details will be made available in due course.
Member suggestions for further cruising opportunities continue to be encouraged!
Future Events
The next key date in the club calendar is participation in the annual Ship Ahoy! event at Summerlee Museum, Coatbridge on Saturday 25th April.
The CRSC will host a publicity stand, providing an excellent opportunity to promote the club’s activities to a wider audience. Come along and say hello!!
Final Thoughts
Members are reminded to regularly check the club website for updates, new articles, and announcements. The ongoing strength and success of the Clyde River Steamer Club depends on the continued engagement and support of its members.
I look forward to seeing you at the AGM and beyond!
Warmest regards,
