Waverley Excursions cancels 2019 season and launches appeal

Happier days: Waverley entering Ayr Harbour

The charity which operates Waverley has launched an appeal for funds to renew her boilers and get her sailing again in time for the 2020 season.

The paddler’s entire 2019 season has been cancelled, following the discovery of irredeemable defects in her existing 20-year old boilers.

All Waverley supporters are being encouraged to donate to the appeal. Replacing her boilers is likely to cost over £2m.

Statement from Waverley Excursions Ltd:

Dear Supporter,
WEL deeply regrets to inform our customers and loyal supporters that Waverley will not operate in 2019.
As part of our winter maintenance programme we have been undertaking boiler works but unfortunately the required repair is complex and costly.
Following extensive consultation and investigation it is now conclusive that the ship’s boilers require replacement and no further attempts will be made to repair. We now face a significant challenge to raise the required funds to reboiler Waverley and return her to service.
Waverley is owned by a Registered Charity which will shortly be launching an appeal to ‘Save the Waverley’ and ensure that she sails in 2020. We fully appreciate any support at this time to help return Waverley to steam.
We are truly sorry for the disappointment and inconvenience caused by withdrawing Waverley from service.
There are 3 options available to you: you can DONATE, TRANSFER OR REFUND your booking.
