CRSC announces exciting 90th anniversary programme

Paul Semple, WEL general manager, will be guest speaker at the CRSC 90th anniversary dinner in October

CRSC’s 90th anniversary celebrations are headlined by a special dinner on Friday 14 October in Glasgow, at which Waverley general manager Paul Semple will give the toast to the Club.

The dinner will be held at Loks Bar & Kitchen, a comfortable restaurant in Shawlands (Glasgow’s south side — see map below), where we will have our own dedicated room. Members, partners and friends are invited, and you can book here.

The 90th anniversary programme also includes a nominated excursion on Waverley to Arrochar on Saturday 28 August (specially reduced prices for CRSC members) and two Zoom meetings highlighting the Club’s rich photographic heritage.

During our winter series at Jurys Inn, the Club will be addressed by Captain John Gillies, one of CalMac’s most experienced and respected masters (9 November). At our March 2023 meeting we will welcome back Robert Morrison, CalMac director of operations, for a presentation updating us on developments since the pandemic.

CRSC president Robin Copland introduces the 90th anniversary programme:

Dear Members and Friends,

90 years of the Clyde River Steamer Club — something worth celebrating, we thought, but what to do?

Well, first of all we needed a cruise – something spectacular. Waverley Excursions Ltd’s general manager Paul Semple was approached and readily agreed to make Waverley’s end-of-summer visit to Arrochar a nominated CRSC@90 Celebration Cruise. You can buy tickets here, specially discounted for members, family and friends.

The idea of a dinner was mooted. Seemed like a plan and we decided on Friday 14 October – why? Well, there are a series of happy coincidences that make that date especially suitable:

  • The Club’s first evening meeting of 2022-23 is on Wednesday 12 October in Glasgow
  • Waverley has her last sailings of the year on the weekend of 15-16 October (Saturday to Loch Goil and Arrochar; Sunday to Tighnabruaich, Scalpsie Bay and Bute coast)

We hope that members of the Club from far afield will be tempted to come for the dinner and sail on Waverley that weekend; or maybe even make a longer stay of it by coming for the Wednesday evening meeting at Jurys Inn and spending some time in the West of Scotland.

Robin Copland, CRSC President

The venue for the dinner is Loks Bar & Kitchen, 16 Newlandsfield Road, Glasgow G43 2XU, just off the Kilmarnock Road in Newlands, near Pollokshaws East station on the Cathcart Circle/Newton railway line. It has excellent bus links to and from the city centre — any 38 bus, also No. 3 (Govan Cross) and the No. 4 Stagecoach bus for Ayr. Parking is also available very close to Loks.

We will be gathering at 6pm and carriages will be at 9.30 to allow members and their guests to get home safely by public transport if they so desire.

I will chair the proceedings. Paul Semple will give the toast to CRSC, and Stuart Craig will respond on the Club’s behalf.  There will be ample time for members and their guests to mix and mingle.

Tickets are £35.00 per person — this includes a welcome drink, a three-course meal (see menu here) and tea/coffee.

You can buy tickets here.

I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on 14 October, if not before.

Robin
